What are my nutritional needs?

Nowadays, the concept of nutritional needs is essentially biased.

Unfortunately, we have been accustomed to abstract nutritional logic to evaluate our diet in terms of things like calories, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, etc…

Let’s take the example of calories.

Apart from the numbers, do you really know what calories are?

A calorie is an ancient unit of energy. It is the quantity of energy necessary to raise the temperature of one gram of liquid water of 1°C under an atmosphere.

Applied to the field of food, calories represent the energy you can get from the macronutrients (carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) in the food.

This is how we can say that, for example, 1 gr of sugar provides you 4’000 calories or 4 kcal.

However, calories do not tell you the quality of a food, so you don’t know the quality of the carbohydrates, fats, and proteins you are eating.

Even worse, calories in food do not reflect what is actually going to happen in your body.

For the same amount of calories, a food will behave differently from one person to another depending on the quality of that food (is it refined or whole grain?) and the person’s metabolism.

Ultimately the only thing you know is how many calories you are putting into your body.

This is only one example with the calories, but actually, we have the same problem with apprehending our nutritional needs only throughout the spectrum of fats, sugar, proteins intakes.

This is why we should consider our nutritional needs according to our consumption of natural healthy foods rather than a calculation of isolated nutrients.
