How to protect the immune system?

The immune system is an incredibly complex entity that is not yet fully understood. Responsible for so many vital functions in our body, it is of paramount importance to avoid harming it.

When it malfunctions, it is not always possible to fix it. Sometimes, the best we can do is to slow or even halt the pathological process.

Without an immune system, we can’t live, and we can’t protect ourselves against harmful pathogens.

Importance of the immune system

We know our immune system best for the role it plays in protecting our bodies from the development of nasty microbes, be they viruses, bacteria, or fungi.

In fact, the immune system has many other roles in our body. For example, it is essential to the development of our brain and the proper functioning of our organs in general.

Why? Because immunity is intimately linked to the control of inflammation and the cleansing of our tissues. The many cells involved in our immunity have diverse functions, such as digesting dead or abnormal cells, stimulating or stopping inflammation, and specifically activating other immune or non-immune cells.

Recently, the close relationship between inflammation control and immune dysfunction has finally been recognized, as has the relationship between metabolic diseases, inflammation and immunity!

These publications are two examples of how dysregulation of this interaction can contribute to the development of various diseases.

In other words, immunity is involved in all diseases in one way or another.

Communication between immune system cells is extremely complex and takes place via cytokines. Cytokines are messenger proteins synthesized by cells that influence the function of other immune cells and the cells of our organs and tissues.

Thirty years ago, conventional medicine was considering around fifteen cytokines, and today, more than a hundred, and yet their interactions are still mostly not understood. This is just an example to show you how complex the immune system is and how incomplete is the understanding of its functioning by conventional medicine.

A well-functioning immune system is therefore essential to promote :

  • Good cellular communication
  • Proper hormonal secretion
  • Tissue cleansing by eliminating dead or damaged cells

Causes of immune disorders

When we understand the complexity of the immune system, we also understand how it can be attacked and unbalanced in a variety of ways. This makes it particularly vulnerable to the toxic environment in which we live today.

Anything that can attack the proper functioning of the immune system can lead to immune disorders, like:

  • Lack of nutrients (amino acids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc.)
  • Junk food with its unhealthy fats, additives and processed foods
  • Pollutants (heavy metals, pesticides, endocrine disruptors, etc.)
  • Noise
  • Vaccines
  • Serious or poorly treated infectious diseases
  • Medications
  • Drugs, tobacco, alcohol
  • Lack of sleep
  • Exhaustion
  • Stress
  • Chronic illnesses
  • And many others

But that’s not all. Some bad habits can damage your immune system. Here are two examples:

  • The regular intake of medicines such as antihistamines (allergy medicines). They block histamine, a cytokine important for the proper functioning of nonspecific defenses and inflammation.
  • Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs without a prior diagnosis, i.e., all drugs with anti-inflammatory action other than cortisone (anti-fever medicines, painkillers, etc.). In an infectious state, they prevent inflammation, which is an essential part of the immune response.

Symptoms of a compromised immune system

As a general rule, symptoms can be grouped as follows:

  • Fragility to climatic conditions such as cold, wind, humidity or even heat, manifested by the development of repeated infections (colds, ear infections, sinusitis, bronchitis, cystitis, etc.)
  • Development of an auto-immune disease, which is often only diagnosed when the first symptoms appear
  • The appearance of cancer of any kind. In this case, the immune system has been unable to eliminate the cancer cells.
