How much physical activity
our body needs?

It all depends on what body needs we consider.

Our body is designed to survive, not to thrive. This simple fact makes us fully responsible for our well-being. If we do not push ourselves to use the fullest of our abilities, our bodies will not maintain them for us.

Therefore, the key question is: Do you want to thrive or survive?

How much physical activity does our body need to survive?

Almost none, and fortunately! Can you imagine if we needed to have an important physical activity in order to survive? We would be a lot less on this earth…

For survival, our body only needs minor movement throughout the day. It’s hard to determine the lower limit, but we can say that the human body is incredibly good at surviving.

For example, people hospitalized and bedridden are exposed to various health problems linked to their excess immobility.

In that scenario, even if the body can still survive for a certain time, the patient will develop illnesses threatening his life.

So in summary, we can say that we can’t survive long with a total lack of physical activity.

How much physical activity does our body need to thrive?

A lot!

Thriving it’s an entirely different story compared to surviving, and this is why it’s so difficult to thrive.

Although we should not fall into an excess of physical activity, most of the time, we won’t have enough of it.

To thrive, our body needs both movement and sports, which are the 2 categories of physical activity.

  • Movement
  • Sport

Movement

The movement comprises everyday activities like walking, carrying weight, moving things, cleaning, cooking, etc.

It can also include soft sports practice or when you practice way below your max level.

In general, we can identify movement as something that does not exhaust us, that does not push our body to its limits, and that does not require a warmup.

Movement can be practiced at any time under any conditions. It is a main component of the injury recovery process.

To our body, movement is good for:

  • Blood circulation
  • Bowel movement
  • Weight control
  • Metabolism turnover
  • Mental-emotional-physical balance
  • And more.

Sports

Sports comprises all dedicated activities like games:

  • Football
  • Basketball
  • Rugby
  • Tennis
  • Etc

But also practices that can be done as sports :

  • Climbing
  • Running
  • Swimming
  • Etc

In general, we can identify sports as something that will hit our reserves of energy, that will push our body to its limits, and will require a proper warmup to avoid injuries.

Sports can not be practiced safely whenever we want under any conditions. It requires proper timing and good conditions. For example, it’s not healthy to practice sports when being tired, jetlagged, injured, or sick.

To our body, sports practice is good for:

  • Muscle mass
  • Appropriate growth
  • New physical skills
  • Weight loss
  • Coordination
  • Reflex
  • And more.
