T4 (thyroxine) is not active. It must lose one iodine atom and become T3 (triiodothyronine) to be the active thyroid hormone. The thyroid gland, therefore, produces mainly T4 and a little T3.

The advantage of producing a prohormone like T4 is that the tissues and organs receiving T4 from the bloodstream are free to transform it into T3 as required. In fact, it’s a brilliant invention. Why?

  • A significant lack or excess of thyroid hormones can make us seriously ill

Thus, as we mentioned above, thyroid hormone levels are precisely regulated according to our needs and many factors like our metabolism and climate.
